Vince Zampella, the mind behind the globally famous first-person shooter Call of Duty, has died in a traffic collision in California he was 55 years old.

The tragic news was verified by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, the development studio he co-founded.

The celebrated industry figure lost his life when his automobile collided and caught fire on a freeway in LA on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"We are facing a heartbreaking loss, and our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends, his loved ones, and all those touched by his creative vision," a spokesperson for Electronic Arts stated.
