"When are you chatting with the band?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: I also longs to be Haim's fourth member. And we're far from alone. Multiple high-profile supporters have publicly coveted the role.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a close gang. Their videos often show them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to make music."

"And thus all are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The group are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics follow endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence demanded a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

One man left Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"We have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
