The McLaren driver just pipped team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the points lead from his teammate by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, outpaced the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, sitting 36 points Norris, was classified in 17th place as his Red Bull team opted for a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to have an incident, if briefly, when he rotated at the fourth corner soon after starting. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before rotating through the escape zone, and was lucky to avoid just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the final moments of the session, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho corner leading to the final bend on to the pit straight. The veteran ended the session in 19th place, just behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren pair were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car in third, over half a second off the Australian's time. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Bortoleto in front of Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
