A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
